Track how Google AI Overviews answers for your category

AI Overview tracking records whether the AI summary above Google's results names your brand, how it describes you, and which pages it cites. Koalr runs 25 real buyer prompts through Google AI Overviews and six other engines on a schedule, so you can see the week a competitor takes the slot you expected to hold.

How it works

From a screenshot to a measurement.

01

Start from buyer-intent prompts

Broad category terms tell you little. The prompts worth tracking are the ones a buyer types while comparing options or defining requirements, in their own words.

02

Capture the answer, not a proxy

Every run records whether an AI Overview appeared, whether it named you, how it described you, and the exact pages Google cited to build it.

03

Watch the pattern, not the day

AI Overviews are variable, and some queries do not trigger one every time. A fixed prompt set run on a schedule separates a real loss from normal movement.

The questions behind the product

What teams ask before they start tracking.

How do you track Google AI Overviews?

You run a fixed set of buyer questions through Google on a schedule and record, for each one, whether an AI Overview appeared, whether it named your brand, and which pages it cited. A screenshot is evidence of one moment. Tracking is the same question asked repeatedly, so you can tell a trend from a fluctuation.

AI Overviews are more variable than the classic results page. The same query can trigger an Overview one week and not the next, and the sources behind it change as Google finds new material. That is exactly why a single manual check misleads more often than it helps.

Why is your brand missing from AI Overviews?

Most often because the pages Google draws on for that question do not discuss you, not because Google has assessed you and ruled against you. An AI Overview is assembled from a handful of sources. If those sources cover your competitors, the summary follows the sources.

Ranking on page one does not protect you here. A page can be used as a source without your company being named in the answer, and a competitor with weaker conventional rankings can be recommended outright because its positioning is easier to interpret.

Is your content cited but your brand not named?

This is a distinct failure mode and it needs a different fix. Being cited in the source list, being named in the answer, and being recommended as a choice are three separate outcomes, and a tool that reports only one of them will hide the other two.

A high citation rate with a low mention rate usually means your content is teaching the answer while someone else collects the credit. Our study of 300,318 real AI citations covers which page types produce which outcome.

How do you get into AI Overviews?

By making a page easy to extract from on a question Google already answers with an Overview. In Koalr's citation data, Google's two AI surfaces together account for 56.7% of every citation a how-to page earns, so question-shaped explanatory content is genuinely the right investment for this surface, in a way it is not for ChatGPT.

The structural detail, including what keeps an already-ranking page out of the summary, is in our guide to how to rank in Google AI Overviews.

Two ways to do this

Screenshotting, or tracking properly.

Searching the query yourself is a reasonable way to start, and worth doing once so you know what the tool automates. It stops being useful at about the point you need to prove a direction.

Checking by hand

  • One query, one moment, one location.
  • No record of whether an Overview even appeared last week.
  • Screenshots pile up and answer no question about direction.
  • Nothing links the change to the page that caused it.

Tracking with Koalr

  • 25 buyer prompts across seven engines, on a schedule.
  • Every Overview, brand named and cited source recorded per run.
  • Prompt-level history, so you can see the week it turned.
  • Gaps arrive as a ranked list of what to fix first.

Why this surface behaves differently

We are pre-launch, so no borrowed logos and no invented quotes. These are numbers from our own citation dataset, covering 300,318 citations across 23 brands and six engines.

Google AI Overviews draws about a quarter of its citations from blog pages and under a tenth from homepages. ChatGPT is close to the mirror image. Optimising for one and measuring the other is the most common way a genuinely good page gets written off.

Questions teams ask about AI Overviews.

Still wondering? Run your free scan.

AI Overview tracking is the practice of running a fixed set of buyer questions through Google on a schedule and recording whether the AI Overview appears, whether it names your brand, how it describes you, and which pages it cites. It measures the answer a buyer actually reads, rather than the position of a blue link beneath it.
